AMBATOZAVAVY

Ambatozavavy is a fishing and farming village located in the southeast of Nosy Be, 11km from Hell-Ville. A necessary stop on the way to the Lokobe reserve, this village lies close to the Lokobe wildlife and flora.
The village is primarily known for the stone that gave it its name. “Ambatozavavy”, a combination of “Vato” (stone or rock) and “zavavy” (woman), the name of the village would therefore mean “At the Female Rock”.

Why the feminine rock?
The shores of Ambatozavavy are made up of a series of small beaches, mangroves, and rocks. Towards Ampasipohy lies a cluster of rocks, one of which is naturally sculpted into the shape of female genitalia. From this distinctive shape arose a belief that the fishermen and village are under the protection of this rock, a symbol of a spirit endowed with supernatural powers. The famous spirit of "Vato zavavy" is said to facilitate the search for a soulmate, the stability of a couple, and the grace of childbirth.
People from different ethnic groups come to make wishes. Easily identifiable, the rock is surrounded by red and white fabrics, representing Gold and Silver, symbols of the Sakalava kingdom, the ethnic group that mainly inhabits the island of Nosy Be.
In this traditional Sakalava village where centuries-old customs and traditions are still present, you can feel the freedom, envy of the Malagasy.

Through a stay, a day in a pirogue, or a walk to discover the Fauna and Flora of Lokobe by day or night, immerse yourself in the very heart of the history and traditions of Nosy Be.
